DVD ripping goes legit with RealDVD - High Tech Gadgets

RealNetworks will soon let users rip DVDs to their hard drives--legally. The company will be unveiling the RealDVD software at Monday's DEMOfall conference in San Diego, but CNET got an early look at the software. Our hands-on impressions follow:

Operation is simple and straightforward. Once the RealDVD software is installed, just pop a DVD into your PC, and the program will copy the entire disc to your hard disk. Depending on the read speed of your computer's DVD drive, the operation will probably take 15-20 minutes (for dual-layer discs that house 7 to 8.5GB of data). You can copy as many as your hard drive will hold, and the program's browsing screen gives you the cover art and relevant metadata (cover art, stars, directors, plot summaries, ratings).

Whether you're at 37,000 feet or you're accessing the program on a home theater PC hooked up to your TV, you need only click on the movie you want to watch, and it'll start straight away. (We say "movie," but RealDVD works just as well for TV shows on DVD as well.) The files are uncompressed, and include everything on the disc--all the extras, and all of the surround sound and alternate audio tracks. Videos can only be watched in the program's built-in software player, but you can toggle to full-screen viewing, and videos autoresume wherever you last left off.

Savvy PC users will ask, "What's the big deal? I've been ripping DVDs to my PC's hard drive for years." Fair enough, but RealDVD adds some relevant bullet points to the equation. First off, it's legal: That's because the program retains the DVD copy-protection, and even adds a further layer of DRM to the files. (Real is standing on the precedent set by the Kaleidescape's 2007 court victory.) So you shouldn't have to sweat a prison term for copyright violation next time you're toting your laptop through airport security. Secondly, it's transportable: you can rip the discs to an external USB hard drive and watch them on up to 4 other PCs on which you've installed the program. (OK, you can do this and more with underground DVD rippers, but the point is that RealDVD is offering a reasonable degree of viewing flexibility, instead of locking the movies onto just one computer.) And thirdly, the software is easy to install and use--anyone familiar with, say, iTunes should have no problem ripping DVDs with RealDVD.

RealDVD is a completely standalone program--it's not integrated with or related to the company's RealPlayer software or Rhapsody subscription music service. It will cost $40-50 (the software will be available as a download and, later, as a shrinkwrapped offering), but Real will be offering it at an introductory price of $30 for a limited time. Additional licenses (for watching movies ripped to your external hard drive on up to 4 other computers you own) will be $20 a pop. It's Windows only right now, but Real says it's looking into a Mac version as well.

In case you're wondering how RealDVD verifies that you're ripping DVDs that you legally own, the answer is: it doesn't. Effectively, you're on the honor system. Aside from an admonition on the splash screen that reminds you to not rip discs you don't own, there's nothing preventing you from archiving DVDs you borrow or rent.

Is it worth the price? During our quick hands-on shakedown cruise with a beta version of RealDVD, we found that it mostly lived up to Real's billing, but it wasn't without issues. For instance, the software didn't seem to find the cover art for many recent movies. And we noted that it can only import copy-protected DVDs--if you've got a disc that's DRM-free, it assumes it's an illegitimate copy, and refuses to import it. (We assume the first issue is just a reflection of the software's pre-release beta status, but the latter seems to be an intended "feature.") Still, for frequent travelers or those looking to backup or share their movie collection throughout the household, it looks to be a feasible option--and the price is certainly low enough to hit impulse buy territory.

Of course, if Real can extend and expand RealDVD as a standardized platform, things could get a lot more interesting. Imagine RealDVD-certified set-top boxes, game consoles, or TVs, where you could just plug in a USB hard drive that houses the bulk of your movie collection and have instant access. Or RealDVD-compatible portable devices, onto which you could drag and drop movies to watch on the go. Those are the sort of features that could make RealDVD into a must-have product. Of course, if this it catches on, RealDVD might just be the first of a series of legal DVD ripping products to hit the market as well.

Apple watchers spot 'iPod Nano' pix, iTunes hints - High Tech Gadgets

Tuesday's Apple event can't come soon enough for the gazillions of people eager to find out what the company has in store.

Hence, the latest rumor/hint/supposition: The Web site MacNN says it has confirmed that there is indeed such a thing as the fourth-generation iPod Nano, which has long been suspected as one of the highlights of Tuesday's "Let's Rock" event. It also has what is says is a "verified authentic photo" of the device.

The supposedly imminent new iPod Nano, MacNN says and shows, sports the previously reported long, lean, tapered look, along with an aluminum skin. The photo on the site shows a copper-hued music player encased in a protective plastic display housing.

Engadget, meanwhile, is offering up a picture of an unboxed alleged iPod Nano, in lime.

And a bit later on Saturday, we spotted an item on Ars Technica's Infinite Loop, wherein it is reported, according to a source close to the situation, that iTunes 8 has been confirmed for the Tuesday event, and, according to another source, that iPhone 2.1 will be released that day.

The future of exercise is here, and it's heavy on the techno.

Fitness equipment is catching up with tech-savvy, gadget-loving exercisers who are downloading workouts onto their iPods, wearing heart-rate monitors and logging the miles they've run to continually fine-tune their workouts.

For gym rats, the latest cardio and strength machines will do much of the work for them, allowing users to customize workouts and compile their fitness data on home computers so they can keep a close watch on their progress. For example, someone could plug a USB stick into an elliptical trainer, work out, save the information to the USB and download that into a home computer. From there, a new workout can be designed with specific time and intensity, then downloaded into the elliptical next time, programming the machine to go at that pace. By tracking workouts, exercisers can see whether they're progressing, or need to work harder to achieve their goals.

Some of the machines work directly with iPod Nanos, which can track workouts with the help of a sensor built into a shoe. Easy-to-navigate touch screens are replacing boring, old-school LED readouts. One company introduced a weight machine equipped with an instructive video to demonstrate proper form and speed for various exercises, perfect for those who need strength-training tutorials.

This growing technology in the fitness world may be a boon to exercisers, says Randy Drake, senior vice president of community and corporate development for 24 Hour Fitness.

SPN, the cable powerhouse that calls itself "Worldwide Leader in Sports," is looking to extend its domain in virtual worlds by merging video game graphics with real-life sports anchors.

The network, which is owned by Walt Disney, has spent the last year working on a new technology with Electronic Arts, the leading game publisher, that would enable ESPN commentators to interact live with realistic-looking, three-dimensional virtual players as they pontificate about coming matches during broadcasts.

"It's a way for us to remain relevant," said John Skipper, ESPN's executive vice president for content. "We want to make sure we remain connected to lots and lots of fans, and using the language that gamers understand is one way."

Boiled down, the complex technology, which will make its debut this Sunday on ESPN's popular NFL Countdown program, involves using an Electronic Arts' title--say, Madden NFL 09--with specialized digital-camera equipment in the studio. Presto: both real and virtual people move around the ESPN set to demonstrate plays and possible situations.

Sony will be dropping the prices on its standalone (non-PlayStation 3) Blu-ray players by $100 in September, according to an anonymous source cited by CE insider Gary Merson on his HD Guru Web site.

Around the same time, the source claims that budget players manufactured by Funai and sold under the labels Philips, Magnavox, Sylvania, and Insignia could drop as low as $249. Specifically, the Sony BDP-S350 would drop from $400 to $300, and the as-yet-unreleased step-up model, the BDP-S550, would be introduced at $400, instead of the $500 price that was previously announced.

Now, anonymous sources are a dime a dozen on the Internet, but our normal degree of “beware stuff you see on a blog” cynicism is tempered by two points. First: Merson’s had a good track record on getting the inside scoop on forthcoming price drops in the past (example). Second, the fact that prices are coming down as we approach the all-important holiday buying season just makes sense–we’d be more surprised if the prices didn’t fall.

Logitech Squeezebox Boom: The ultimate Wi-Fi radio?

If you took one of Logitech’s increasingly ubiquitous Pure-Fi desktop stereos and integrated one of its Squeezebox network-audio streamers, you’d probably come up with something like the Logitech Squeezebox Boom. Previous Squeezebox models had to be plugged into an existing stereo receiver or speaker system, but the Boom is the first model in Logitech’s network-audio line to have the speakers built-in. The result is a full-service Wi-Fi radio that can access a wide variety of digital music straight from the Internet or from a networked PC.

We’ve been playing with an early sample of the Squeezebox Boom, and–so far–it’s one of the best products in its class we’ve ever seen. That’s not surprising, given that it has the same guts as the recent Editors’ Choice Squeezebox Duet. As far as abilities are concerned, the Boom pretty much has the identically impressive range of features as the Duet: the ability to stream everything from premium Rhapsody and Sirius content to freely available Internet radio, podcasts, Pandora, Slacker, and Last.fm music straight off the Web, as well as nearly any non-DRM digital-audio format from a networked PC (Windows, Mac, or Linux). (Editor’s note: CNET and Last.fm are both subsidiaries of CBS.) But the Boom trades the Duet’s digital and analog outputs for a pair of good-sounding stereo speakers (3-inch woofers flanked by 0.75-inch tweeters), so the entire system is self-contained.

The unit’s handsome, black housing is a mere 5-inches high by 13-inches wide and 4-inches deep. It’s got the same sort of bright, vacuum, fluorescent display found on the “classic” Squeezebox, which makes it easily viewable, even from halfway across the room. The control panel is pretty much a spread-out version of the Squeezebox Duet remote (itself strongly modeled on the iPod). Most functions are accessed from a single scrollwheel–depress the wheel to make a menu choice, use the nearby “back” button to reverse course. Six preset buttons are also on board for quick access to Internet radio stations of your choice. A small wireless remote is also included–it magnetically attaches to the Boom’s topside (or any other metal surface) for easy locating.

Awhile back, I wondered aloud when we’d finally see a “Hulu box” that could stream on-demand video from that increasingly popular online video destination directly to your TV. And a couple of weeks ago, we got our hands on the first potential candidate in the form of the ZvBox. The PC accessory converts your computer’s video output and makes it accessible on your home HDTV (multiple TVs, in fact, if your home is cable-ready). It also includes an RF remote with wireless-mouse functionality, so you can navigate your PC screen from afar, and pull up any computer-based media content on the TV screen–including Hulu, iTunes, BitTorrent, or whatever other Web- or PC-based video strikes your fancy.

Unfortunately, we found the ZvBox had too many caveats.

Sure, they make life easier, but could all this technology be harmful to your health? WebMD gets the experts to weigh in.

The computer revolution created new ways of working, sharing information, and having fun. Our high-tech gadgets and devices may be wonderfully expansive of our intellects, but they can be hard on our bodies. And being "always on" can take a toll on your health.

Here are seven ways technology and the high-tech lifestyle may be hurting you.

1. Computer Vision Syndrome

The human eye is not adapted for staring at a single point in space for hours on end. If you log significant time in front of a computer monitor, you've probably experienced computer vision syndrome: eyestrain, tired eyes, irritation, redness, blurred vision, and double vision. Luckily, this isn't a permanent condition; but persistent strain can open the door to infection.

2. Insomnia

Working into the evening face-to-face with an illuminated monitor can play havoc with your internal clock. Replace work with exciting stuff like video games after dark, and you have an even more potent recipe for a sleepless night. One study showed that playing a game involving shooting suppressed levels of melatonin, the hormone that's involved in regulating cycles of sleep and waking.

Chilling in front of the TV is no better. Another study showed that adolescents who watched three or more hours of television per day were at a significantly elevated risk for frequent sleep problems by early adulthood.

3. Repetitive Stress Injuries

The constant tiny movements needed to maneuver a mouse or type on a keyboard can irritate tendons; swelling can press on nerves. As little as a half hour a day of computer mouse use could put you at risk for pain in your shoulder, forearm, or hand.

But repetitive stress injury, or RSI, can affect your whole body, not just the part you've overused, says Mary Barbe, PhD, a professor in the department of anatomy and cell biology at Temple University. Injured cells release substances called cytokines that travel through the bloodstream.

"If you have enough of these circulating in your bloodstream, they can be toxic to nerve cells and other cells," Barbe tells WebMD.

4. Obesity

There's a much more direct relationship between obesity and a digital lifestyle. It comes from spending too much time sitting on your rear. It's not late-breaking news that Americans are getting fatter and that kids are packing on extra pounds at a younger age. The hours per day Americans spend glued to the tube has been trending steadily upward, according to the Nielsen Co., with households leaving the set on for an average of eight hours and 14 minutes per day during the 2006-2007 season.

"Basically, the more TV you watch, the heavier you are," Jason Mendoza, MD, MPH, tells WebMD. In addition to the sedentary activity itself, all the commercials for gooey pizza actually can make you eat more, he says.

Nowadays, screen time isn't limited to television; we may spend as much or more time using a computer for work or school. Then, for recreation, instead of going outside to shoot some hoops, we play video games. When Mendoza, assistant professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, compared the body weights of preschoolers who used computers and those who didn't, he found the computer-using kids were tubbier. More than two hours a day parked in front of any kind of screen seems to be the tipping point, he says.

High-tech gadgets rotting away

This refers to the news article titled, “Sulpicio Lines: case study in poor governance.” (Philippine Daily Inquirer, 7/26/08) The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) requires ship owners to equip their companies and ships with high-tech navigational and communication equipment, such as Search and Rescue Transponder (SART), Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), and Navtex. But these gadgets are all useless.

The country does not have any stations and equipment to pick up or receive the signals these gadgets emit if these were activated. Remember the Philippine Coast Guard has admitted that the equipment that should have been installed to precisely monitor and receive the signals is all rotting inside container vans!

So do away with these things, and may I suggest then that all the “bancas” (small boats) in the country be upgraded and provided with better engines, and all boatmen be trained in first aid and search and rescue. Give them cellular phones.

Why? Who are the first persons to arrive at the scene of a sea disaster? Fishermen in their trusted small bancas. They do the actual search and rescue.

Government? It just appears on TV and blames just about everybody except itself.

Microsoft Surface

This is basically a touch-screen coffee table or a table with a 30" display. It allows a user, or multiple users, to manipulate digital content by the use of natural motions and hand gestures, similar to the futuristic computer screens portrayed in the movie "Minority Report." So, the family can gather and look at digital photos or leave each memos just by touching the table. These will soon launch in hotels, casinos and restaurants and will make it to your home in three to five years. Future versions of Surface will incorporate a myriad device-sync capabilities. Apple and Sony’s Newest Idea: Viewing Goggles | high tech gadgets

We have covered viewing goggles like the Vuzix iWear and myvu before, and these have yet to catch on to the general populace. Maybe it’s the way they look, because no one wants to walk around looking like Cyclops from the X-men films.

There is a rumor going about that Apple is working to change the portable viewing arena with some fancy goggles that will allow portable viewing of video files. These video files can be taken off of an iPod or other Portable Media Player (PMP).

I have even heard that electronics giant Sony is working in partnership with Apple to perfect the technology of the screen inside the goggles. Laptop Trends to Look for in 2008 | high tech gadgets

It’s coming up to the end of the year (yes, you will be doing your Christmas shopping in a few weeks) and you know what that means – it’s time to look ahead to some of the things we’ll be seeing in the market come January 2008.

As always, technology is a moving target, so about this time next year I’ll be doing the same thing. I should also point out: If you are in the market for a new laptop, you may not want to read this, as most of what I’ll be talking about will either be too expensive this year or not available at all, no matter how badly you pray Santa will add it to your wish list.

Secondary Displays

We called this “Sideshow” during the Windows Vista launch and then, for the most part, stopped talking about secondary display options entirely. This second display is typically used on the outside of the laptop, and can show information with the lid closed. Initially, only Toshiba with its R400 was unique with this display mode before Dell recently brought out their stunning M1730 gaming notebook with this capability. But be that as it may, it won’t be until next year before we see a large number of systems with these options in the market. These secondary displays can show you games stats, if you have pending appointments while your laptop is in low-powered mode, and in some cases, even give you quick access to email or instant messaging depending on where they are and how they are configured.

Hybrid Hard Drives

This was something else we thought we were going to see right after Windows Vista launched, but initial products just didn’t live up to expectations, so it was back to the drawing board for another try. Happily, Seagate is now convinced they have the bugs worked out of these gizmos, and as a result they are already starting to roll them out to the market. Their biggest benefits are power savings and performance, as they work like a huge hard drive cache. But because the solid state portion of the device (they are a hybrid of solid state and magnetic drives) may actually be able to power down for extended periods, they should be vastly more reliable in use as well. Expect to see more on such devices next year.

Solid State Hard Drives

Right behind the hybrid hard drives are solid state hard drives and they too have been coming to market this year. Initially nose-bleed expensive (32GB models were going for over $500 USD), they should drop in price sharply throughout the year in 08. Initial drives used a slow IDE interface and so really didn’t produce the expected performance boost. Later drives are SATA-based and should be significantly faster, and while they will remain relatively expensive for their capacity (64GB will be the sweet spot next year) the performance and reliability will be worth it for some.

HD DVD, Blu-ray Options

There will be more and more HD-DVD and Blu-ray-optional drives in larger notebooks at increasingly attractive prices. However, given the upswing in video available over the network and an increasing number of folks who have figured out how to rip DVDs to their hard drives, I’ve actually made the prediction that this year will show declining interest in optical drives in notebooks. Still, for those that want them, these drives will provide the opportunity to hook your laptop up to a big-screen TV(with such displays increasingly found at good hotels and in friends homes) to watch HD movies that way. Keep in mind that most movies look great on a laptop screen, so you will likely not notice the difference between an HD and non-HD picture. high tech gadgets
